► (1593-1633) Poeta inglés. Perteneció al grupo de los llamados metafísicos. Autor de El templo, poesías sagradas y jaculatorias privadas.

(3 abr. 1593, castillo de Montgomery, Gales–1 mar. 1633, Bemerton, Wiltshire, Inglaterra).

Poeta metafísico británico. Fue elegido orador de la Universidad de Cambridge en 1620, posición que le significó alternar con la corte real. Luego fue ordenado clérigo y se hizo cargo de una parroquia rural, a la que se consagró generosamente hasta su muerte. Sus poemas, publicados póstumamente bajo el título The Temple [El templo] (1633), abordan asuntos personales, doctrinarios y rituales, y se destacan por el dominio de la forma métrica, el uso de la alegoría y la analogía, y la devoción religiosa que emana de sus versos. Algunos son caligramas, es decir, poemas cuyo tema principal se expresa mediante la tipografía o la disposición material de los versos. (See also poesía metafísica).
